Barranco de Guayadeque

The Guayadeque ravine is located on the island of Gran Canaria. It is the natural separation of the municipalities of Ingenio and Agüimes, and constitutes one of the largest ravines in the archipelago. These cities take the water from the channel of this ravine.

The Barranco de Guayadeque stands out for being one of the greenest and most impressive valleys on the island. Cacti, pitas, poppies, palms, Canarian pines and almond trees, as well as more than 80 endemic species, grow in abundance on its steep slopes.

It stands out for its pre-Hispanic archaeological remains and for its valuable endemic flora and fauna. The area is very important at an archaeological level, as there are hundreds of caves that housed many aborigines, there is even a hermitage and several restaurants dug in the rock. In the 19th century, after the inhabitants of the area began looting the tombs and selling most of the archaeological objects to the Canarian Museum of Las Palmas, the ravine was designated as a nature reserve, to protect it from further damage.

As a paradise for gifted hikers, there is much to explore, both in organized groups and alone. The road continues upwards, passing the Archaeological Interpretation Center, and you can enjoy the magnificent landscapes of the valley without much physical effort.
